INTRODUCTION OF DADIM (PUNICA GRANATUM)

Pomegranate fruit benefits are explained in classical text like Charak Samhita which is oldest text in ayuveda. There are few fruits with such nutrition value as pomegranate. Apart from pomegranate fruits, other parts of the plant are also used such as bark, root bark, flowers, fruit skin which has many other health benefits.The pomegranate is used for its health benefits from thousands of years.It is rich source for vitamin B complex

Pomegranate is called Anar fruit in Hindi.

BOTANICAL NAME:-PUNICA GRANATUM 

FAMILY:-PUNIACEAE

SANSKRIT NAMES
Bijapura, Dadima, Dadima-phalam, Dadimah, Dadimam, Dadimaphalam, Dadimasara, Dadimavrikshaha, Dadimba, Dalika, Dantabijaka, Darimba, Karaka, Kuchaphala, Kuttima, Lohitapushpaka, Lohitapuspaka, Madhubija, Milapatra, Milapatraka, Mukhavallabha, Nagarata, Parvarut, Phalamla, Phalashadava, Pindapushpa, Pindira, Raktabija, Raktapushpa, Shukadana, Shukavallabha, Sunila, Suphala, Svadvamla, Valkaphala, Vrittaphala 

DESCRIPTION:-

Tree or shrub, l.5-5 m tall. Branches terete, opposite, branchlets usually ending in spines. Leaves
glabrous, lustrous 19-35(-50) x 8-12 (-15) mm, oblong-lanceolate to obovate or elliptic, subpetiolate,
entire, apex sub-actue to obtuse. Flowers scarlet red or white, conspicuous, 3 cm or more in length.
Calyx 20-35 mm long, indented slightly above the middle, reddish, somewhat succulent; lobes 5-7,
8 mm long, triangular. Petals and stamens inserted at the throat of the calyx. Petals 16-20 x 10-12 mm, broadly obovate, wrinkled, alternating with the sepal lobes. Filaments 7 mm long, multiseriate,
persistent. Ovary subglobose; style thick, 1 cm long, reddish; stigma simple; slightly bilobed.
Fruit globose, 2-8 cm in diameter, sometimes persistent, pale red to scarlet, or brownish, partitioned
by thin leathery yellow septa; the rind thick and coriaceous. Seeds red or pink, 10 mm long, angular,
testa thick, fleshy, juicy.
Flowering Period: April July;
Fruiting Period: Sept.-Dec.

DOSE:-Fruit swaras 20 – 40 ml, Skin kwath 40 – 80 ml

CHEMICALCONSTITUENTS:
The most abundant phytochemicals in pomegranate juice are polyphenols including the hydrolyzable
tannins called ellagitannins
Malvidin pentose glucosides, Tannin, Ursolic acid, Carotene, Nicotinic acid, Pectin, Proetin,Delphidin,
Diglycoside, Aspartic,catechins,gallocatechins, prodelphinidins,anthocyanins such as delphinidin, cyanidin,
and pelargonidin glycosides
Pomegranate seed oil contains:-
punicic acid,palmitic acid,stearic acid,oleic acid and linoleic acid
Vitamins:-
Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Pantothenic acid (B5), Pyridoxine (B6), Folic acid (B9),
choline, Vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K
Minerals:-
Calcium, iron, magnesium, Manganese, phosphorus, sodium, zinc

Effect on Tridosh:-
Sweet pomegranate (swadu):-Tridosha ghan- balance Tridosh of body i.e vata, pitta and kapha
Sweet-Sour Pomegranate (swadu Aml):-Kinchit pitta kar- slightly increases Pitta
Sour pomegranate (Aml):-Pittajanakam-increases Pitta to a greater extent & Kaphapham- balance kapha and vata in body

1. Sweet pomegranate (swadu)
2. Sweet-Sour Pomegranate (swadu Aml)
3. Sour pomegranate (Aml) on bases of taste & there is explaintion of therapeutic uses

1)Sweet pomegranate fruit therapeutic uses:-
Tridosha ghan- balance Tridosh of body i.e vata, pitta and kapha.
Trit hara- relieves excessive thirst
Daaha hara- relieves burning sensation.
Jwarnashan- effect in fever
Hridya- Good for heart disorders
Kantha mukha dosh Ghana- cleanses and clarifies oral cavity, throat
Tarpan- provide important nutrients to body
Shukrala- improves sperm count, semen quality and aphrodisiac
Laghu- undergoes digestion very easily i.e light to digest
Kashyanurasam garahie- with help of astringent taste it helps to relieve diarrhoea, IBS and ulcerative colitis
Medha balakara- improves intelligence

2) Sweet-Sour Pomegranate fruit therapeutic uses:-
Depanam-improves digestion power of stomach.
Ruchya- improves taste of food by acting on taste buds on tongue. Helps to relieve anorexia.
Kinchit pitta kar- slightly increases Pitta.
Laghu- undergoes digestion very easily i.e light to digest

3) Sour pomegranate fruit therapeutic uses:-
Pittajanakam-increases Pitta to a greater extent
Amavata- benefit in Rheumatoid arthritis
Kaphapham- balance kapha and vata in body.
