Introduction OF APAMARG (ACHYRANTHES ASPERA)

Apamarg Reference has come in athar veda for treatment of infertility and indriya dosha i.e. sense organ are not functioning well. In Charaka samhita there is complete chapter on apamarg with name”APAMARG TANDULIYA”, describing numbers of formulation and ways it can be used for treating diseases in human body. Apamarg is used to prepare a special medicine called Kshara which are used extensively in surgical procedures to treat fistula aslo in oral medicine for obesity, tumors etc.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF APAMARG AVAILABLE:-
1. White apamarg (shweta) – Achyranthes apera
2. Red apamarg (rakta) – Puppalia lappaceae

DESCRIPTION

It is small, erect, annual perennial herbs with woody base about 2mt in height. Stems are angular, simple and ribbed with tinged purple color. Leaves are ovate finely attached to stem on both sides. Flowers are whiteish in color and seeds of apamarg are reddish brown in color subcylindric at apex and rounded at the base.

PART USED:-ROOT, TANDOOL, LEAF, PANCHAANG

DOSE:-Swaras 10 - 20 ml, Kshar 1/2 - 2 gm

CHEMICALCONSTITUENTS

Betaine, Achyranthine, Ecdysone, Ecdysterone, Inokosterone, Oleanolic acid, Hentriacontane, Glycoside, Alkaloids, achyranthes saponins A,B,C,D.

AYURVEDA PROPERTIES

GUNA (Quality):- Laghu (lightness), Rooksha (dryness), Teeksna (sharp), Sara (induces movement)
RASA (Taste):- Katu (pungent), Tikta (Bitter)
VIPAK (Metabolism):- Katu (pungent)
VIRYA (Potency):- Ushan (hot potency)
Effect on Tridosha – Balances Kapha and Vata Dosha.

Deepana, Agnikrut- Improves digestion strength
Pachana- pramote digestion
Rochana- improves taste, relieves anorexia
Chedi- has scraping effect, useful in fat reduction
Chardi- useful in  nausea and vomiting.
Kaphanashana- Breaks down and expels sputum collection
Medohara- reduces fat deposition (lipid disorders and obesity)
Anilapaha- relieves bloating, balances Vata Dosha.
Hrudruja- useful in cardiac disorders with cholesterol deposition in blood vessels
Adhmanahara- relieves bloating, gaseous distension of abdomen
Kandughna, Kanduhara- Useful in relieving pruritis (excessive itching)
Shulahara- relieves abdominal colic pain.
Udaraghna- Useful in ascites
Raktagrahi- Improves blood
Hrut Grahi, Vantikrut- in excess dose may cause nausea and vomiting
Hidhmahara- relieves hiccups
Arshaghna- Useful in piles, haemorrhoids
Dadruhara- useful in urticaria, itching, allergic skin rashes
Apachihara- useful in fibroids, glandular growths.
Apamarga root paste is applied externally to relieve pain in scorpion bite
Amaghna- Relieves ama- a product of indigestion and altered metabolism.
To induce labor pains a thin paste of fresh roots is applied to external genitalia.
Apamarga Kshara- The dry Achyranthes aspera plant is burnt in open air and ash is dissolved in water and processed to prepare a medicine it is called kshar and it used in many minor surgical conditions and also for oral administration.
